FOOTBALL.
The captain of the Melrose Football Club's third team writes in reference to the criticism of the referee's decisions in Saturday's match against Wellington College, to state that his team, as the defeated side, was quite satisfied with Mr. Lewis's decisions. A deputation consisting of Major Steward and Mr. J. Hutcheson, M.&.R's., and Mr. 1. Hyams (Hon. Treasurer of the New Zealand Rugby Union) wailed on the Minister for Defence this morning and asked for leave for T. Pauling to accompany the New , Zealand representative team to Australia. The Minister, while admitting Pauling's qualifications, said he could not establish a precedent by allowing members of the [Defence force to travel outside the colony on sporting pursuits. He therefore declined to accede to the request. In order that no obstacle may be placed in his way to accompany the team to Australia, Pauling sent his resignation to the Defence Department this afternoon. It is likely that Pauling Mill endeavour to enter the New South Wales Permanent Force,
