PETONE'S PROPOSED PUBLIC SQUARE.

Last night's public meeting at Petona was well attended. The Mayor (Mr. R. C. Kirk) occupied the chair, and reported that the committee had decided to recommend, the purchase of a site under offer from the trustees of the late Mr. J. S. Manning, measuring 200 by 220 feet, aud bounded by Fitzherbert and Sydney streets and Camp-bell-terrace, for the sum of £450, A4O feet ' road to be formed on the northern boundary parallel with Campbell-terrace. Mr, G. London nioYßd, aud Mr. J. Piper seconded, that the offer be accepted. An ''amendment was moved by Mr. Webb that public subscriptions be invited, and that the 'proceeds ba handed over to the Council as some assistance towards the proposal to procure a recreation ground for the borough. This was lost. From the discussion that ensued it appeared to be understood,, that the proposed plot of land was for a recreation ground. Some objection was also taken to the condition attached as to forming the road. Ultimately the motion was altered hy adding the words — " With the reservation that the road question ba left in the hands of the committee." On being-put the .motion was carried with but j three dissentients. The question of local celebration was then, considered, v hen it was decided that a display should be made on Monday evening, in order to avoid clashing with the Wellington demonstration, but that the bonfires would be .' guted oh Tuesday evening in unison with Wellington. Mr. Price offered £5 towards the purchase of fireworks, and also the necessary timber to erect a platform for the display. A committee was formed to , canvass for donations for the purchase <ft fireworks, and to carry out other arrange* meats for the display. The Mayor intimated (hat probably he would request the burgesses to observe both Monday and Tuesday ai public holidays.
