FIRST DAY'S RACES. (Feom Otje Special Reportee.) Hutt Racecourse, Tins Day. For the first day's races the weather is fine, •with a chilly south-east breeze prevailing. The course and surroundings are in perfect condition. About 800 people were present for the opening event. "Waiwetu Handicap, of 75 soys ; second horse to receive 10 soys from the stakes. Rore's b h Hillstone, syrs, Bst (Herd) ... 3 All ran. On Dit jumped away in front, and romped home an easy winner by six •lengths, The Miser two lengths from Hillstone, Undine and Return last. Sylph and Thunder made play to well in the straight, when Derrett brought In the Swim up with a nice run, and won comfortably by a leugth and three-quarters, a neck separating second and third, Saltatorial fourth, Murua and Tamatea last. "Waiiiku jumped off Erst, with St. Paul in close attendance. Racing along the back Waiuku had a lead of a couple of lengths, but on turning into the straight St. Paul closed on the leader, and a desperate race up the straight between the pair ended in favour of the Taranaki horse by a hah! length, Pom Pom, coming with a late run, finishing third, two lengths away, just in front of Barshot, with Strathbraan fifth, lorelei nex. Marino last. Time, lmin 45sec. Dividend, £5 19s.
