ASSISTANCE FOR THE SUFFERERS.

THE WHOLE COLONY RISES TO THE OCCASION.

Hastikgs, 20th. April. A meeting was held in the Borough Council Chambers, Hastings, to-day, and a committee was formed to deal with urgent cases. Captain Russell and Mr. Fitzßoy, the Mayor of Hastings, were appointed a deputation to meet the Hon. W. Hall-Jones on his arrival. Expressions of sympathy have teen received by the Mayor, Mr. Swan, from all parts of the colony, including the following from the Administrator of the Government :—: — '' No doubt your' appeal to the colony will he generously responded to. I have sent by post a subscription of £50 to the fund your Worship has set on foot. I need not say that, in common with all, I deeply sympathise with the settlers in the severe calamity that has fallen upon them. Sergeant O'Donovaa I knew to have been an excellent officer, and entitled to the respect of those who had an opportunity of observing how he discharged his duties. Constable Stephensou, too, was, to my knowledge, a credit to the police force. " James Pbendekgast, " Administrator, Wellington." A general relief fund is being organised through the province. Cheistchubch, 20th April. The Major has called a meeting of citizens for to-morrow afternoon to consider the question of raising a fund for the relief of the sufferers by the Hawkes Bay floods. ArcKLAND, 20th April. Subscriptions are being raised for the I sufferers by the Hawkes Bay flood. The Mayor has opened a list, and lists are also placed at the banks and newspaper offices.
