THE BATTLE OF MALUNA PASS. SPLENDID FIGHTING OF THE TURKS.
EDHEM PASHA LEADS IN PERSON. THE HILL-TOPS STREWN WITH DEAD. AN IMPORTANT TURKISH SUCCESS GREEK SUCCESSES ALSO RECORDED. (Received April 21, 9.44 a.m.) Athens, 20th April.
Further particulars of the battle at Maluna Pass state that the struggle was fierce and stubborn. The Turks, commanded by Edhem Pasha in person, slowly gained the heights and occupied the chief defiles of the pass. They fought with great decision,'and the artillery, under Riaz Pasha, fired .with remarkable accuracy at a range of 900 yards. The Avhole pass rang with the roar of the artillery and the continuous firing of the infantry. The men calmly replaced their dead comrades, and faced the shower of bullets. Edhem Pasha remained gravely impassive, and received the reports of his generals as to the state of the battle on scraps of bloodstained paper. The hilltops and northern side of the pass were strewn with the dead. The Greeks, fearing an extension of the battle to Elassona in Thessaly, the residents of the town took flight. The victory gained by the Turks at Maluna gives them the command of the road leading to the Greek headquarters. Fighting at Karya continues and two hundred Turks and a thousand Greeks have already been killed. The armies are engaging each other from the opposite hillsides, and the artillery fire is especially heavy. Reports from Elassona state tha,t the fighting has commenced at Janina in Albania. A severe struggle at Damasi ended in the defeat of the Turks. The Greeks also repulsed the Turks at Negeros on the north-eastern frontier.
