At a meeting of the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce to-day letters were read from the Nev\ Zealand Shipping Company the Shaw, Savill & Albipn Company,* intimating that they could not see their way to modify their decision to cease booking to Dunedin while the Victoria Chaunel remained as at present. The letters were referred to the Harbour Board. At a meeting to-night of the Public Library Association it was resolved that it is desirable that a Free Public Library should be established, and a Committee was appointed to confer with the Committee having in hand the matter of the proposed purchase of the Colonial Bank buildings. Mr. R. Hudson (of R. Hudson & Co., biscuit manufacturers) wrote that he was prepared to subscribe £1000 towards the purchase of the Colonial Bank buildings for an Art Gallery and Public Library if nine others will give a similar sum, or £500 if 19 others give a similar donation.
