. <, . SOME MORE OF THE RECOMMENDATIONS. A FEDERAL ENGINEER OFFICER REQUIRED. ~£g [PRESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received January 4, 10 a.ni.) Melbotjbne, This Dat. Although great secrecy is maintained over the recent Conference of Commandants, some of the recommendations made have been allowed to transpire. As the fortifications of Thursday Island and King George's Sound are federal works, it was suggested that it would be an additional guarantee of security if the works were regularly inspected by some officer specially chosen by the several colonies which contribute to the cost. It was also resolved that the services of an Engineer officer at a salary of £1000 per annum should be secured on behalf of all the colonies, to advise on matters relating to fortifications, submarine mining, and electric lighting. It was suggested that there should be extensive armaments at Thursday Island, and garrisons at Roebuck Bay and Port Danrin. It is probable that the co-operation of the Admiral tj- wijl be invited on this subject, as it may be necessary to protect the cable in the vicinity of the land.
