The "Wairarapa Caledonian Society made its annual sports gathering unusually attractive this year, and the result was a record attendance at the Masterton oval. The list of contests was an exceptionally long one, an,d sufficiently varied to suit aIL tastes, including as it did the inevitable bagpipe playing, dancing competition, foofc races, bicycle races, wood-sawing and chopping contests, wrestling, jumping, &c, &c. — 39 events in all. The sports were well conducted by a good ground committee, and there was hardly a moment during the long day when there was not some competition or contest in progress. Mr. TV. Sellar (Secretary) and his numerous assistants are to be congratulated upon the capital manner in which the sports were conducted, and "upon, the all-round success of the gathering. 100 Yards Handicap. Johansen, who walked splendidly, was unable to catch Drummond who won by about a dozen yards. Time, 6min 40seo. Tossing the Caber; prizes 30s and 16s.— G. F. Day, 1 ; H. Dawson, 2. Highland Fling for men; prizes 30s and 15s.— G. Lang, 1 ; C. Smith, 2. Two-mile Bicycle Race (amateurs) ; prizes £2 and £i.—W. Sutton, 90yds, 1; F. Ibbetson, 110 yds, 2. D. Caselberg, 90yds, wasr the only other starter. A good race between the two placed men, Sutton just squeezing home by a wheel. Just on the winning post the machines of the two riders came in contact, and both men had a nasty fall. Time, smin 44sec. Highland Fling (boys) ; prize 20s.— R. J. Smith, 1. 220 yds Handicap ; prizes £3 aud £1 10s. — C. J. Clark, 9yds, 1 ; H. Wilson, 14yds, 2; F. J. Fellingham, 10yds, 3. Seven started. Won by about a yard. Time, 24 l-ssec. Hornpipe ; prizes 20s and 10s. — J. Kitson, 1 ; B. Smaile, 2. Two Men Maiden Sawing Competition; prizes £3 and £1 10s.— T. and A. Dew, 1 ; S. and W. Tinkersley, 2. This was » splendidly contested event, all the men finishing close together. 440 yds Handicap (amateurs); prizes, trophies valued at £2 and £I.— Dupre, 25yds, 1 ; Jeffreys, scr, 2 ; Moore, 25yds, 3. These were the only starters. Won by about four yards. The Wrestling competition (Cumberland style), prize £3, was won by C. Robinson. 'Five Mile Bicycle Race (Cash Amateurs) ; prizes, £2 and £I.— J. Blade, 20yds, 1; J. Joyce, scr, 2. Six competed. The finish, between the two first men was a keen one, Blade, who, as in the previous race, led all through, winning by a little more than a length. Day, 32ft, 2. 880 yds Handicap ; prizes £4 and £1 10s— B. Coleman, 30yds, 1 ; D. Annatt, scr, 2. About 10 started; won all out by about 6yds ; time, 2min (j 4-ssec. Hewing Competition, £2 and £I.— Neils ' Albrechtson, 1 ; J. Christiansen, 2. Bagpipe Music, £2 and £I.— D. Ross, 1 ; W. Ross, 2. Scotch Reel, £1 10s and 15s.— C. Smith, 1 ; H. Laing, 2. The Long Jump, for which the prizes were £1 10s and 15s, was won by Jars, 19ft; Dawson, 18ft 2in, 2. Irish Jig, £1 and 10s.— J. Ritson, 1 ; W. Mackay, 2. Wrestling (catch-as-catch-can), £2 10s.— Robinson, 1. Consolation Bicycle (cash amateurs), two ' miles ; £1 10s and 15s.— Owen, 40yds, 1 ; Arthur, 30yds, 2 ; Joyce, scr, 3. This was a good race. There were also Caledonian gatherings Held in Auckland, Dunedin, Oaniarn, and Timaru. At the Auckland meeting Thomas Roberts attempted to lower the amateur quarter-mile hurdles world's record. Owing to a misunderstanding proper provision was not made for the time-calling, but he did it in 59 2-ssec.
