[BY TELEGEAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Lyttelton, Ist January. At the Lyttelton Regatta, the Pastime won the First-clas!#Yacht Race, the Onawe second, and t,he Zephyr third. The Waterwitch won the second-class race, and the Bettina the third-clnsjj race. In the rowing races, Union won the Senior and Junior Double Sculls and the Single Sculls and Junior Pairs, Wairewa the Senior Pairs, Akaroa the Maiden aud Youths' Sculls and Pairs, and Lyttelton the Youths' Single Sculls. One of the features of the regatta was an excellent submarine explosion, conducted by Captain Falconer. A volume of water was (sent hundreds of feet into the air, and made a most beautiful 6ight. Between 10,000 and 16,000 people were carried on the railway from Christchuroh.

SPORTING. ♦ WAIRARAPA SUMMER MEETING. Yesterday was beautifully fine for the first day's racing at Tauherenikau of the Wairarapa Racing Club's Summer Meeting. The attendance, which included a very large number of "Wellington visitors, was excellent, and the sport was good, although there were one or two cases of what appeared suspicious running by competitors during the day. In the case of Petroline, which ran so well in the Nikau Hack Handicap after only being able to get third in the Trial Hack Race earlier in the day, the Stewards held an enquiry into the form she displayed, but adjourned the matter for further consideration. The owner of the winner is a brother of Petroline's owner. The arrangement* of the meeting wore firstclass. The success of Mr. A. W. Cave's gelding Sea Serpent in Va.% Wairarapa Cup was well received. Two Hutt-trained horses (Loveshot and Salute) were successful in the Plying and Settlers' Handicaps respectively, both winning comfortably at the finish. Loveshot is trained by A. The Auckland blood stock sale was continued yesterday, when the yearlings at Sylvia Park bred by Messrs. L. D. and A. H. Nathan, and those bred by Mrs. Walters at Glenora, Papakura, were submitted to auction at the former establishment. There was a very fair attendance pf sportsmen at the ringside, amongst whom were'tlie Hon. Hugh Mossman (Queensland), Messrs. G. G. Stead (Christchurch), and W. Douglas (Napier). In only one case during the afternoon was the bidding at all spirited, and that was for the possession of a colt by Cuirassiev from Nordenfeldt's half-sister Jadestone, who was secured well within his value on behalf of J. In the New Year Handicap, Electioneer, who would have paid £20 10s, was disqualified, with the other two placed horses, a protest having been entered for inconsistency, and the race was run over again, Ascot winning, and paving £3 4s.
