THE CHESS TOURNAMENT.
[by telegbaph.— pbess association.] Chbistchubch. 31st December. The following are the results of the championship contests at the end of the fourth round : —
Ist January. In the fifth round the Ruy Lopez opening was used at all the boards. The results are as follows : — . Barnes (Wellington W.M.C.) v. Hookham (Canterbury).— At the 91st move . Hookham was mated. Mason (Wellington) v. Jleldrum (Bangitikei). — Meldrum forced his opponent to resign. Edwards (Dunedin) v. Pleasants (Rangitikei). — Edwards obtained a strqng attack, and forced Pleasants to resign. Mellor (Dunedin) ?. Grierson (Auckland). — A weak move of Grierson cost him his queen, and he shortly afterwards resigned. Anderson (Canterbury) v. Gifford (Bulls). — On the 44th move a dravr was agreed upon. Cocks (Wellington) bad the bye.
