PRIZE DISTRIBUTION.

♦ ST. MABY'S CONVENT HIGH • SCHOOL. Last evening the prizes won during the year by the students at St. Mary's Convent High School were presented at the schoolroom by the Very Bey. Father Devoy. Introductory to this ceremony, however, the scholars treated the audience to an excellent programme of musical and literary items. On many previous occasions the young people have given the public examples of their musical and elocutionary training, notably in a recent entertainment at the Exhibition Buildings, and it is sufficient, therefore, to say with regard to last evening's performance that i,t was exceedingly pleasant to listen to and cleverly given by Misses Long, Slade, Driscoll, Waldegrave, Shapter, Falconer, M. Father Devoy said it must be a great source of pleasure to the good sisters who conducted the school to find their pupils bad worked so well, for it must be remembered that the sisters both here and elsewhere did not labour for the wealth of this world — they were not salaried teachers— but simply devoted their talents on the children committed to their care. It had been said that if these schools were submitted to Government inspection they would not come up to tbe standard of State schools, but in various parts of the colony they had submitted to this test, and wherever this had been done the schools had come well out of the ordeal, and had proved that they were at least equal, and in some ca-'es were superior to the standard of other

schools. (Applause.) The Rev. Fathlr complimented the pupils upon their musical abilities as shown in the programme submitted that evening, and in 'the recent examinations connected with Trinity College, and with a few words of encouragement to those scholars who had not gained prizes this year, he wished them all a "very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and a pleasant vacation. » Dr. W,atters also quoted a few of the percentages gained by the school pupiL^in the Trinity College examinations, as showing the excellence of the trainine: in the school, and the gathering concluded by the pupils giving a hearty round of applause for the Mother Superior and her associates. The school reassembles on the Ist of February next.
