The increased yield from the various goldfiolds in the colonies leaves an ample margin for export, and if gold and bullion to the value of £500,000 wore exported each month wo should scarcely miss the money. The position of the banks, so fa 4as the store of the precioua metal is conoerned, is vory strong, the holding being equal to 5s 2d in the £. The strength of tho position may bo seen in tho following table : —
Tho figures for last quarter establish a record, and compared with the figures for June, 1893, when the banking orisis waa at its worst show an exoess of about £7,000,000. ' The note circulation has gone down on the quarter, but risen on the year. Proportionately, more notes circulate in New Zealand and Western Australia than in the other colonies. The percentage of reserve to liabilities, as compared with tho corresponding quarter of last year, is as under : —
