ASSAULTS IN THE CITY.

A' brutal assault was committed in the Basin Eeserve iv the early hours of yesterday morning upon a well-known woman named Mary Valadore. At about 10.30 a.m., Constable Cassin found the woman lying under some trees in the Eeserve, in a very exhausted and mauled condition. Her face bore the appearance of having been terribly knocked about ; her nose was broken, and her body waa a mass of bruises. The constable at once had the woman conveyed tithe Hospital, where Dr. Greigfnind, en examination, that she was in addition suffering from serious, though not immediately dangerous, internal injuries. The story told by the victim, who was released from the Terrace Gaol only on Saturday morning, was that she was passing through; the Basin Eeserve at about 1 a.m. on Sunday, on her way to a friend's house at Newtown, when she was met by a man who, without giving her the slightest warning, struck her on the face, knocked her down, and. kicked her. The injuries she received rendered her insensible, and she remembered nothing further till daylight, when she managed to crawl under some trees, where she was subsequently found. She is unable to give the slightest description of her assailant. This morning her condition bad impr9ved. Apparently another assalt upon a woman was committed yesterday, as a street-singer named Jane Macdonald, of Courtenay-place, was admitted to the Hospital yesterday suffering from injuries to her head. The woman is rather retjjent about the matter, and an expressman wlio conveyed her to the institution know little about the affair. This morning tho woman was somewhat better.
