RAILWAY ACCIDENTS.
» TO THE EDITOE. Sib — About twelve months ago I was standing on the platform of a train just arrived in Petone. A little girl, about ton years of age, was about to alight, when the train gave a sudden jerk backward, and the child partly fell between the carriages. Fortunately, I was quick enough to grasp her, and so saved her from a frightful acoident. I turned pale and felt sick at the incident, and am indignant at the criminal neglect of the authorities in not connecting the carriages with a netting to prevent the possibility of such a dreadful occurrence as that of yesterday at Palmerston North. Now that many excursions by train are approaching such precautions should be taken. Surely it is not the small expense that is considered. If so, words cannot be found strong enough to condemn such parsimony. I hope the public will not let the matter rest till something is done for their safety in this respect. I am, &0., F. A. V. Wellington, 28th November, 1896.
