The jury, in the case of the woman Sayer, charged with having procured abortion upon Eva Smith, returned after a lengthy deliberation with a verdict of Not Guilty, and the accused was therefore discharged. • THEFT. Thi9 morning, John Tagart, alia* James Casey, was charged with the theft of a pocketbook and £2 10s from J. Stacey. The prisoner pleaded Not Guilty, and was defended by Mr. Wilford. Mr. Gully prosecuted. Particulars of the case have already been published is connection with the Lower Court proceedings. The case is one of alleged pocket-picking. The case was a very brief one, anti a verdiot of Guilty was returned. At the request of counsel for the accused his Honour deoided to defer sentence until he obtains a report from the Probation Officer as to the prisoner's past conduct. There are 47 meat-preserving works and boiling-down establishments in the colony. From returns prepared by the EegistrarGeneral it appears that there are 460 more hands employed and £42,316 more wages paid this year at these establishments than in 1890. The value of land, buildings, machinery, and plant has enormously ' increased within the last quinquennium. Since 1890 this item has increased in value by £234,900, while the value of the output has not kept pace with it, the latter increase being only £187 6s 6d. Canterbury (with Marlborough) takes the lead in the value of the output for 1895, which is £689,276, Wellington comes next with £348,412; and Otago third, with £267,252. Auckland, Taranaki, and Hawke's Bay follow. The " Trilby" plain and fancy dress ball is advertised to he held at Thomas'i Hall on Thuridfty next
