THE RETRENCHMENT IN NEW SOUTH WALES. DISCUSSION IN PARLIAMENT.
[PBESS ASSOCIATION.] (Received September 11, 11 a.m.) Sydney, This Day. In the Legislative Assembly, Mr. L3 m e moved that the Chairman leave the chair on a Bill because of the non-presentation of the promised report of the Public Service Commission. He indignantly urged that injustice was being inflicted on the retrenched Civil Servants through the absence of information and the masterfulness of the Commissioners. 4 He characterised their proceedings as hole and corner work. The Premier (Mr. Reid) replied, warmly, that as soon as tiie Board had dealt with the appeals the report would be presented. When that time came members would perhaps find that'the f eport gave more information than they bargained lor. The Board had carried out a great work admirably, and had saved Aeafly £300,000 per annum. Many worthless officers had been got rid of. In no less than 17 cases the Board had ascertained that dismissed officers had pilfered State funds. Other incompetents had been kept in their places through influential friends. The days of old political patronage had gone, and it would be well for the Civil Servants to remember that. The motion was negatived by 's3 to 27.
