[Mr. Cates's death was probably due to consumption. lie has for some time been an inmate of a private hospital. He was a favourite on the Australian stage as an exponent of juvenile parts. He was a member of Mr. Garner's London Comedy Company, which toured Australia about 1879, and he played Romeo to the Juliet of Miss Fanny Reid in the production of Shakespeare's play with the original Lyceum scenery and dresses at the Melbourne Opera House in 1884 or 1885. His last visit to New Zealand was in February, 1890, as a member of Mr. Frank Thornton's Company, when he played in "The Private Secretary" and "Sweet Lavender."]
