♦ OUR GOVERNMENT'S REPLY TO THE VICTORIANS. . I FBISS ASSOCIATION. | (Reoeived May 4, 11 a.m.) Melbourne, This Dat. The Premier has reoeived a reply from Mr. Ward, Colonial Treasurer of New Zealand, with reference to the tax on Viotorian commeroial travellers in New Zealand. Mr. Ward says he is nnable to agree with the statement that the tax seriously affects tbe trade of Viotorian merchants in New Zealand, and asks Mr. Tnrner to consider the effeot the exemption of non-resident traders in New Zealand would have upon tbe local merohants, who are subjeot to Inoome Tax. He adds that the tax was imposed in consequence of the difficulty experienced by the representatives of nonresident merohants in making the return of the business done by them and the profits arising therefrom. He has carefully watohed the effect of the tax, and has heard many representations on the matter, but at present regrets, he says, that he does not oonsider it advisable to make any alteration.
