ST. PATRICK'S DAY.

Appropriate references to the Festival of St. Patrick, whioh ig to be celebrated tomorrow, were made yostorday at St. Joseph's Church by the Very Rev. Father Dovoy and at St. Mary of the Angels' by tho Rev. Fathor Goggan. Tho Bankß and the insurance and Government offioeß will be closed to-morrow. A picnio is to be held in Father Lane's grounds, Lower Hutt. Special provision has been made for tho amusement of the young people. Tho Hibernim Society will be prosont. The Dueo is announced to make two excursion trips to Day's Bay, leaving the Queen's Wharf at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Karori Gardens will be open to the publio all day at a nominal oharge. Hpeoial arangements for the holiday traffic have been made by the railway authorities. In the evening there will be an Irish oonoeit in the Opera House. A oapital programme has been prepared. Amongst the contributors will bn Madame Eveloon Carlton, Miss N. Parsons, Messrs. A. Miller (Chriatohuroh), R. B. Williams, E. J. Hill, and M'Duff Boyd. Ths train for the Hutt will bo delayed until after the concert. The annual ball of Loyal Rose of Sharon Lodge, 1.0.0. F., will be held at tho Upper Hutt in the evening St. Patrick's College Band will play selections of music in the College grounds at 9.30 a.m, The Mayor has invited tho oitizens to observe to-morrow as a holiday, and the shopkeepers to make to-morrow their halfholiday instead of Wednesday. A strong countor-movement among tho business people has, however, arisen, and the bulk of the leading dealers of the oity indioate by advertisement in another column that they deoline to fall in with his Worship's suggestion. It is on the oarda that a Tradesmen's Association will be formed, the Executive of which will be able to speak with authority on questions of this kind, bo as to obviate the need for canvassing individual dealers.
