CITY COUNCIL.
* The ordinary meeting ot the City Counoil was held last evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr. G. Fisher), and Councillors Anderson, Myers, Tanner, Willeston, Harris, Dovine, Higginbottom, Fraser, Smith, Harcourt, Barber, and Tatum. A deputation, consisting of Messrs. G. Woodward and W. and J. Philiips, attended and asked that the centre traok of the Thorndon tsplanade Bhould be rolled with a heavy roller, in order to break np the sharp stones upon it. Frequenters of the Esplanade, they stated, were doing a lot of quiet grumbling at the state of the traok, whioh could be put in a proper state for walking on if their suggestion was adopted. Mr. Woodward also pointed out tbat an asphalted path would greatly improve the Esplanade. Councillor Myers moved that the suggestion to asphalt a strip down the centre of the traok be agreed to, and tbat the fence be put in repair. Councillor Anderson seconded this, and it was carried. Mr. j. Brace wrote asking tor the removal of gorse at Abel Smith-street. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. Messrs. J. Wilkinson and 13 others wrote asking for asphalting in Pirie-street. It was deoided to consider the matter in framing the estimates for the year. The Finance Committee reported as follows : — The Committee reoommend —1. That four applications for drainage works on deferred payment be granted, viz , one in Ellice-street, two in Molesworth-Btreet, and one in Webb-street. 2. That the olaim of Mr and Mra. Jenkins for compensation in respeot of the drain taken through their property, Ingestre-plaoe, be referred to the City Solioitor, with instructions to take such action as is necessary. 3. 'J hat Mr. James ferry. Inspector of Private Drains, be granted an inorease in his salary of .£25 per annum from Ist April next, making it .£2OO per annum, this amount to be the maximum salary, to be paid for the position. 4. That a reply in terms of the Town_ Clerk's report be sent to Mr. L V. Ludwig with lvspeofc to his complaint re'oolleotion of ra'es. 5. The Committee have also to reporc that, after considerable correspondence with the Governmont, they have arrivad at an agreement as to the amount to ba paid by the Government in respect of the land taken for the Te Aro Eailway — viz , .£2318 ss. They reoommend that this amount be approved by the Council, in order that a settlement may take place before the end of the current financial year Councillor Myers moved to strike Out elauae 3. He objected to any increase of salaries in connection with the Drainage Department. Consideration of the report, with the exoeption of clause 5, was deferred. Clause 5 was adopted. The Building Bylaws came up for confirmation, and were passed, with some alight alteration, by 9 to 2. Accounts amounting to .£7451 12s 7d were passed for payment, and the meeting adjourned at 11 o'clock.
