RIFLE MATCHES.

♦ An exoiting finish took place yesterday morning at the Polhill Gnlly rifle range in the match for the possession of the company 'trophy fired by the members of the City Rifles. The conditions were - 500 and 600 yards, seven xhota at eaoh. The attendance of competitors wawery large. After firing the third shot at 600 yards, Jackson and Hawthorne were ties for first place, and ai eaoh man followed with three bull's eyes, the exoitement as they lay down to fire the last shot waa intense. Jackson was the first to fire, and only managed to score a magpie. Hawthorn followed, and brought out the bull's-eye disc, thus winning the trophy by two points. This is Hawthorn's second win in succession, and the trophy becomes his own property. He has already, since the season started, won outright another yalnable trophy, his reoord for the season for a young shot being almost phenomenal. The following are the highest scores :— A Class.

•Ammunition prizes. Considerable interest is attending 1 the competition for Captain Collins' trophy by tf ami of fonr men each of the City Rifles. At the last competition. Guise's and Madeley's teams tied with 202 for the trophy. Yesterday morning the tie was fired off, and the teams tied again. This tie will be fired off at the long range on Saturday next. If Guise's men win, the trophy is their own property, while Madelry's winning will extend its '"life" for another contest. liient. J. Duthie has promised another trophy to tike its'place, with a re-arrange-ment of the constitution of the present teams. The Wellington Navala fired their sixth match for the Belt and tropbieß at the Evans Bay rantre on Saturday. C P.O. Williams secured his second " leg in" for the A Class Trophy, while Gunner Wcolcott heads the list in B Class. The conditions were seven shots at 500, 600, and 700 yards. The following are the highest soorrs :— A Class.— Thomson & Lewis' Trophy.
