A COSTLY ARTICLE.

+ We were told by cable the other day that Herr Dierle, of the staff of the German Socialist newspaper Yorwaerts, had been sentenced to six months imprisonment for Use majeste in having published an article casting ridicule upon the recent ceremonies in which the German Emperor took part in connection with the twenty-fifth anniversary celebration of the capitulation of the French at Sedan. The following are the words of the article in question : — "Patriotic capitalists intend out of sincere and hearty love to the State to celebrate the sacred Sedan Day this year with especial pomp. They wish to drive their workmen into participating in the murderously patriotic festivity in order to give at any cost a popular character to the anniversary of the great butchery. Where is the man among the German industrial proletariat who does not look upon this manifestation of murderous patriotism with contempt and loathing ? Where is the man among the exploited classes who would dishonour himself by taking part in such celebrations without resentment in his heart ? What workman in Germany, in view of the patriotic howling, would not stretch forth his hand to his French brethren and companions in misfortune, mindful of the motto before which the bourgeoisie of the world grows pale, ' Proletarians of all countries unite ?' " Herr Pfund, one of the editorial staff of the Vorwaerts, was arrested on September sth, but the paper continued publishing articles in the same strain, as also did another paper, the Sozialist, the editor of which, Herr Witzke, was also arrested.
