After a fow minutes' play R Blaoklook, in trying to play Gunthorpe to leg, was given outlbw. 72—3—20. Holdship, who retired hurt last night, made hia re-appearance, with Ashboit to run for him. Tho Canterbury colts wero bowling well, and runs came slowly till a couple of bits by Gore for 2 brought 80 up. Holdship had so tar saored 2 singles. Gore endeavoured to out Reese, but was beaton by a splendid ball. 82 -4 -25. Holdsworth partnered Holdßhip, and hit a full-pitched ball from Reose for 2. Tho bowlers wero now repeated ly sticking up tho batsmen, and as the fielding was also smart, scoring was slow. Hatell, however, allowed a cat by Holdship off Reese to pass hinf, as the rebult of which 2 runs were made, and soon 00 appeared. Holdsworth failed to proporly get hold of a ball from Reese, and North effectod a one-handed catch. 90-5-6. Howard joined Holdbhip, and trom his second ball scored a singlo, but by a bad stroke almost put a ball from Gunthorpo into Wilding's hands in the slips. He made amends, however, by sending another ball to the fence, and a, leg hit for 3 ; and then aroused enthusiasm by hitting Reese to the ropes, causing the century to bo hoisted. Again he hit Reese to leg for 2. Holdship also bit steadily, and Fowke missed an easy opportunity of stumping him as he stepped out to Reese. Hasell replaced Gunthorpe at the town end. Howard lifted a ball from Reese into the outfield, but Lawroii'jo was in the way, and only a single was scored. Holdship hit tteese beautifully to the boundary, and 120 was signalled. The Canterbury captain replaced Reese by Frankisb, whose first ball Holdship put to leg for a couple, one of the fieldsmen mulling the ball. Chiefly by moans of singles, 130 was run up. Bad fielding on the part of Lawrence enabled Howard to score 3 off Hasell. Holdship hit the Bame bowler to the boundary. The next ball Holdsbip returned to Hasell, and the Wellington captain retired for a splendidlyplayed 47, marred by only one ohance. 138 — 6—47.6 — 47. Fitzaimons, the incomer, soon hit Hasell splendidly to the fence, but in driving Hasoll for 2 he narrowly eeoaped Leing caught out by Lawrence. Howard also gave an unexpected chance to Gunthorpo at square -leg, and then out Frank igb for 3, causing 150 to appear. At 163 Stevenson went on to bowl at the town end. Reese stopped a big leg hit by Fitzsimons off Stevenson. Gunthorpe relieved Frankish of the ball. Howard drove Stevenson to the ropes, whioh brought 170 up— past the Canterbury total . The fielding of the visitors had becomo looso. A fullpitshed bal from Gunthorpe dislodged Fitzaimons' stumps, ending a lively but somewhat lucky innings. 182—7-19. Upham went in, and the work in the field beoame worse than over. Upham Bpooned a ball from Keese into Hasell's hand. 193-B—s. Ashboit filled the vaeanoy. The attainment of 200 aroused tremendous applause. Immediately afterwards Howard was clean bowled by Gunthorpe. Bar the ohance to Gunthorpe, his innings had been without a blemish. The spectators gave him an enthusiastic reception on his return. Niven was the last man to go in. Ashboit earned applause by hitting Gunthorpe twice to the boundary, bringing 210 np, Niven snicked Reese fir 3 The luncheon adjournment then took plaoe. There are some 2000 spectators On resuming, both batsmen hit Bteadily till 2.50, when ABhbolt was bowled for 34, the innings closing for a total of 257. The following were the scores :—: — A.
