THE LATE Dr. WHITEHEAD

The remains of the late Dr. Whitehead were buried at the Hutt yesterday with military honours. The funeral left Bouloottatreet shortly before 2 o'clock. First came the Wollington Naval Artillery (under Lieut.Commandor Campbell), of which Dr. Whitehead had been Surgeon ; then followed the Garrison Band under Bandmaster Herd ; and after it was the coffin covered with the Union Jack, and borne on a gun-carriage drawn by a detachment of the D Battery under Cap. tain Warren. Following tho coffin were the members ot the medical profession ; a large number of private frienda, including the Chairman and Secretary of the Mutual Life Association of Australasia, on which deceased held a seat in Dr. Collins' absence ; Major Elliot (Private Secretary to the Governor), Colonel Fox_ (Military Adviser to the Government), and Lieut. -Col. Hume; Wellington Guards (undor Captain Paterson), Wellington City Rifles (under Colour-Sergt. Davis), and Herotaunga Mounted Rifles (under Lieut. Hyde). Lieut.-Col. Nowall waa in command, and was attended by Capt. Falconer, Lieut. -Commanders Haaelden and Hialop, and Sergt.-Major Finn. Surgeons Cahill (Guards) and Mackenzie (City hiflea) were also present. On the maroh to the Thorndon Railway Station the band played " The Garland of Flowera." When the train arrived at Petone it was met by the Petone Navals, with whioh the deceased was at one time oonneoted, the Mayor of Petone (Mr. 14. C. Kirk), Dr. Purdy (an old schoolfellow, and later a partner of the deceased), Sir James Hector, members of the Ulster Masonic Lodge, the Petone Rifle Club, and a large number of looal residents. The procession waa re-formed, and the gun. carriage was drawn to the Hutt by a detachment of the Petone Navals, under P.O. Woods. At the Hutt Railway Station the procession was joined by Dr. Wilford (deceased's first partner) and a number of other frienda, and by the Lower Hutt Oddfellows. On arrival at the cemetery the coffin was carried into tho church by a party of Petone Navala, the pallbearers being Liout.-Commandera Campbell and Hislop, Surgeona Mackenzie and Cahill. Tho escort and firing party consisted of membera of the Wellington and Petone Navals. Tho burial service was conduoted by the Rev. J. Jones, incumbent;, assisted by the Rev. Messrs. Harrißon and Clinton. Fully 2000 persons were present in the cemetery till tho firing of three volleys by the volunteers concluded tho ceremonies. Among the senders of wreaths were the medical profession, the nursing staff at the Hospital, and the Ulster Lodge.
