THE CHINESE.

♦ TO THB BDITOU. Sir — Having lived among tbe Chinose in Hongkong, Shanghai, and Foochow, and traded with them both ashore and afloat, and also having been employed by Qnong Tart in Sydney, I pan vouch for tho characters of the Chinese at present in Wellington aa a law-abiding; and oharitable lot, also very good in trusting Europeans for vegetables, as my experienoe has proved in Viotoria, New South Wales, and Queensland. I have often known the Chinamen to let tho customers run from one' to four weeks without paymont, and sometimes never get paid at all ; and you must remember that the Chinese that are amongst us aro a peaceful, law-abiding, charitable lot, and if you think tbat Europeans oan do the work of Chinose you are sadly mistaken. Hoping' you will tako a favourable view of th<s, as I oan vouoh for its truth, I am, &c, M Hughes. Wellington, 27th August.
