MOUNT SIBION. At 7 this morning the steamer Mount Sirion chartered by the Union Steam Ship Company to 1 run in the New Zealand-Calcutta trade, armed from Calcutta, via Singapore and Aaokland. She it one of the most modern types of cargo steamers, having been launched on 15th March last. Sbe is 335 ft long, by 434 ft beam, by 28} ft deep, with a gross tonnage of 3280 tons. She was built by Workman, Clark, and Co. (Limited), of Belfast, to the order of Smith and Service, of Glasgow, to class 110 Al at Lloyd's, and also in accordance with the requirements of the British Corporation. Deep framing has been introduced instead of hold beams, and quarter pillars are dispensed with, to obtain most favourable storage capacity. The spar deck is of iron, and the main of steel, with beams fitted to each frame. Six watertight bulkheads subdivide the ship, giving four cargo holds, each provided with an ample hatchway, the two larger ones each having two steam winches, with the derrick ontside to suit. The poop is arraneed with a hatch and suited for cargo purposes. All the deck maohinery and fittings are of tue moßt approved type and construction. The stnamer is tigged as a two-masted fore-and-aft schooner, With mists arranged on the telescopic principle, to suit the Manchester Canal. The machinery consists of triple expansion engines of the most modern type, with cylinders of 23in,37in, and 63in diameter, and a stroke of 42in. Steam is supplied from two large steel boilers at a working pressnre of 1801b, and a large horizontal auxiliary boiler provides for the deck machinery. At a trial run an average speed of 11} knots was obtained. The officers of the steamer are : — Chief officer, W. Ironsides; second, W. Em»lie; third, B. Cameron ; first engineer, J. M'Einness ; second, B. M'Killop; third, A. Shorttj fourth, J. Morgan; purser, H. Middleton. Most of the crew are Lascars. Sbe left Calcutta on 3rd July, Singapore Bth Augnst, Cooktown 21st, and arrived at Auckland on the 30th; left same evening, and arrived as Above, bhe leaves for South to-morrow. A large number of hones will be shipped at Lyttelton prior to sailing for Calcutta, and .a call will be made at Sydney en ronte to complete her loading BASQUE GEAOE DEERING, FROM NEW YORK. Testerday morning the barque Grace Deering, Captain Meech, was towed in by the Dnco, after a passage of 102 days from New York. Her cargo consists of 765 tons, including 0700 cases of kerosene.
