THE ANTI-CHINESE LEAGUE.
• TO TBI! EDITOR. Sib— l trust that you will allow me a little of your valuable space to say a few words in reply to " Englishwoman " The lofty tone of " Englishwoman" is extremely amusing, and at tho same time shows how utterly ignorant she is of what competition with the Chinese means. Would " tn^liabwoman" like to see her husband, father, or brother compelled to toil fourteen to sixteen hours per day to enable them to compete with the Chinese, who work all these hours, including Snnday when they get a chance, and do not allow themeel?e3 more than two or three holidays in a year, aa well aa living on a aonle 25 per cent, below that of a European P Our forefathers left the shores of Great Britain, risking life it:olf , in order that they and their children after them might escape the slavery of the Old World. They founded a system which is still dear to the people of this country— that a fair day's work shall earn a fair day's pay, and that there shall be time for recreation and self.improvement. I do not think for one moment that the number of Chinaso m this colony do any greatunount of harm, but we must take % warning from our neighbours—for example, Melbourne and Sydney, and farther away, San Franoieco. In these plants Chinese vices and diseases liavo ruined their thonsands, and their so-called virtues have pauperised tens of thousands. I am gUd that the people of New Zealand are wise in time, and I trust the AntiCbineae league will agitate till tho law is bo made that Chinese immigration will be discontinued, and at the same time try and bring the small European farmers in touch with the people of the city, in order that the one might grow vegetables and the other be taught that a European-grown vegetable ia equal, if not superior, to that grown by a Chinaman. I am, Ao., Young N»w Zealand.
