CITY COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council took placo last night. Present— The Mayor (Mr. C. M. Luke), and Councillors Barber, Tatum, Fraser, Harris, Willeston, Anderson, Harcourt, Devine, Penty, Myers, and Tanner. Councillor Smith was also present, and was heartily welcomed back to the Counoil by the Mayor, who said it should be gratifying to the ratepayers to have men of Mr. Smith's experience representing them. Mr. J. W. Noman waited on the Council with reference to the refusal of a driver's license to his son, aged 18. The Corporation Inspector (Mr. Doyle) said he did not coneider the lad was phyßieally capable of fulfilling the conditions imposed by the by -lav. s. The matter was referred to the Publio Works Committee. A deputation of residents living- in the neighbourhood of Ohiro-road, headed by Mr. A. E. Mabin, asked that the road should be repaired and a footpath formed from Wordsworth-street upwards. They pointed out that tbe road had scarcely been touched since it was made by the Provincial Government, although settlement had gone ahead, and the traffic was considerable. It was now in a dangerous Btato. Furthermore, the toad led to Brooklyn. The Mayor said tho Council had applied to the {survey Department for a plan showing the pegs, and until that waß obtained nothing could be done. The matter would be pushed forward a« expeditionary as possible. Tha deputation also requested that come attention should be paid to tbe road to Marama Crescent, and the Mayor promised to bring the matter before the Publio Works Committee. Councillor Barber moved that immediate steps Bhould be taken to define the Ohiro-road. The motion was seconded by Connoillor Penty and carried. The manager of the New Zealand Eleotrioal Syndicate wrote that th 9 trees in Grant-road, at the back of Mrs. Levin's residence, were interfering with their wires They would hold the Counoil responsible for damage done to the wires. The Town Clerk said the trees were on the footpath. Councillor Anderson moved that the trees should be out down, and Connoillor Fraser proposed that the Counoil should first consult the Soenery Frobervavtion Society. Councillor Harconrt seconded the amendment. It wonld be sufficient if the branches were lopped off. Councillor Tatum moved in this direction. After divisions, both motion and amendments were lost, and matters accordingly remain in ttatu quo. Consideration of the report of the Market* Committee (brought up at the previous meeting of the Conncilj was deferred, and the report referred baok to the Markets Committee. Tho Library Committee recommended that thanks bo Riven to the following donors of books :— Queensland Government, Nationalists' Club. Colonial Museum, Rev. S. C. Lowry, fcir W. L. Bn'Jer, Wesßrs. R. C. Harding, F. H. Ftaser, and J. R. Cumin; and that the Alliance News be obtained for tbo roading-room The recommendations were agreed to. Amendments were made in the burgees rolls. The report of the Publio Works Committee was agreed to with slight amendment. In regard to clause I— "That Mr. A. WiUon be informed, in reply to M 3 application, that the Council is unable to interfere with tho provisions of the Sanitary By-law"— it was resolved to aßk the City Solicitor whether there is any possibility of the by-law being npset. Some asphalting was ordered to be done to the footpath between Wellington-terrace and Clifton-terrace bridge. Accounts amounting to £3215 11b 2d were passed for payment. Iv the absence of Councillor Myers, Councillor Anderson moved that the old box drain be taken out of Tinakori road, between Cotlleville-terraoe and Featborstonte.race step 3, and be replaced by a stormwater pipe drain. The motion was agreed to. 0 Councillor Tatum moved, "That a committee be appointed to report as to the advisability of approaohing the Government with a view of endeavonring to obtain a grant of from three to four acres of the Asylnm Beserve, abutting on Hospitalroad, to be used as a playground " The ground could be easily lo veiled. with the waste from the drainage tunnel, and the Counoil would be conferring a great benefit upon a large number of children living in tho neighbourhood. Councillor Fraser said the ground wbb requited by the Asylum. The motion was leoonded by Councillor Tanner and carried, and Councillors Anderson, Devine, Harris, and the mover were appointed a committee to take aotion in the matter. Councillor Tatum also moved, "That the Street Metal Committee be asked to report on the quality of the metal now being taken from the tunnel near Hospital-road, and its nines* for use." The motion was lost after some disoußsion,
