A young seaman named S J^ Hatton sprang into the water and ] swamtothe assistance of his shipmate, fiel but before he. could reach him Smith Th became the prey of a shark. As the PreP re monster seized him the unfortunate |j"! fellow threw up his arms with a shriek knj and disappeared. Hatton was picked 1 up by a boat from the liner. When wii he got back to the ship he found him- °jjV self the hero of the hour. The officers teßt e8 and crew of the vessel presented him Pa with a watch and chain, and the phi passengers showed their appreciation "" of his daring by raising a subscription o j j for him. Hatton, who is about 22 o bj years of age, is a native of Dover, yin and holds the rank of quartermaster Th in Sir Donald Ourrie's service. At a^ one time, when employed by the ] Glen line, Hatton jumped into the tai Red Sea and saved a man's life. pei ________^__^ mo - ]
