A BOY SAVED BY A COLLIE

3 , Newfoundland and St. Bernarc dogs have always had the highesl s > reputation for saving human life, ._ whether in deep water or in the snow on lonely moor or mountain side. The collie has also some claim tc consideration beyond its unique qualities as a sheep dog. A notable example of the shaggy Scotch doge sagacity was witnessed at Peterborough during the late frost. Bertie, the five-year-old adopted son of Mr. and Mrs. George, of the Bedford Arms, North Bank, went down to the river side, where the water was frozen at the edge, and began to slide with all the carelessness of consequences that belongs to little boys. Presently there was a crackling sound, the ice gave way, and Bertie disappeared so suddenly that he had not even time to scream. In the adjoiningmeadows numbers of young people were celebrating the ice carnival, and some of them saw what happened and rushed to the rescue. But "Bob," the collie, had also seen the child's mishap, and he was first at the waterside, plunged in, and, catching the boy's coat with his teeth, brought him safely ashore. It was bravely done, and the collie received more attention afterwards than the good dog quite relished. The case was reported to the Royal Humane Society, but of course they could not award their medal to a dog. Local appreciation was not to be denied, however, and Mr. Sidney Smith, of the Peterborough Express, has since, in conjunction with "Bob's" admirers, presented him with a new collar, bearing an inscribed plate.
