ON THE LATE MASSACRE IN ARMENIA.
O Power Supreme! Who led Thy chosen band Thro' yawning waters to a Promised Land, Who stayed the enlight'ning orb that rules our day Just time to light the sanguinary fray Which thro' the vale of Gibeon was waged, What side was Thine when earth, with crimes as red As ever dyed the hands of those Ye led, Cried loud to Thee, thro' souls of men enraged. To cast Thine eyes where o'er Armenia teems Those martyred forms, beßide their hills and streams ; Which plead to Thee through neshlesfl, whitening shapes That lie exposed, where earth with horror gapes? O couldst Thou hear, unmoved, their piteous cries Uplifted to Thy throne beyond the skies, When Turkish hordes, like bloody beasts of prey, Made gory town and hamlet on their way ; Butchering helplessness with rooted ire Thro' one long, damning line of blood and fire ? O England ! Thou hadst heroes once for Bons, Be valiant now, avenge those slaughtered ones Whose bleaching bones cry out to all the world That this inhuman power at once be hurled Back to the dark oblivion whence it came. Then forward Albion, or the lips of shame Shall claim base kinship with thy glorious name. — "J.T.W."
