HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho monthly meeting of the Hutt County Council-was heU to-d»y. Present—Councillors Cook (Chairman), Jillett, Wakeham, 0. W. Brown, G. Brown, Bradey, Majendie, Speedy, and Field. The resolutions of the recent boundary conference between tho Hutt and Horowhenua Counoila were read. The action of the Council's delegates was approved Councillor Field was empowered to ascertain the ssnae of the Wharoroa Riding ratepayera as to the proposals of the conference. The Asaiatant Surveyor-General wrote that the Counoil had no powor to oloae the road from the Beltnont Railway Station, as it was on the bank of a river. It waa decided that the Chairman and Councillor Speedy should wait on the Survey Department and ascertain the definition of the word river. Mr. A H. Knigge wrote asking that hia bask fence should be allowed to remain on an unused road at bilveratream. The matter was left in tho hands of Councillor C. W. Brown A slaughterhouse license was granted to Messrs. A. and C. Crawford, Miramar. , The Makara Road Board asked that the r Connoil's Inspector of Works should be inatrncted to estimate the cost of repairing the new road from Makara to Ohariu. The Chairman stated that the Council's portion rf the rood had been swept into the sea by the Easter floods. The Counoil deoided to place his services at the Board's disposal. Mr. G. Galloway, Pahautanui, wrote requesting the Counoil to keep open and in good repair a drain running through his land. The matter 'was left in Councillor Bradey'a hands. Mr. G. Pudney, of Pakuratahi, complained of damage done to his property through the Council blocking the old watercourses. Left in Councillor G. Brown's hands. Messrs. Thompson and Baldwin, solicitors, requested the Council to say that there was a road through section 8, Harbour District, Ngahauranga. The Council deoided to reply that it had no right to any road through the seotion. It was decided that £100 should be voted towards the cost of fencing the County road,tWhareroa Hiding, between Waikanae and Paraparaumu. 'Ihe Inspector was directed to proceed with further retaining walls at Silver, gtream, the cost of the whole work (including what has already been done) not to exceed £500. ' Councillor Wakeham was authorised to have tho Wainm-o-mata-road repaired. Councillor (field waa empowered to allow Whareroa settlers to do their own share of the county road fencing, at a price to be arranged. Authority was given to Councillor Jillett to call for tenders for repairs to Takapu and Porirua Harbour road. It was deoided that Councillor Majendie should expend not more than £30 in repairing bridges in the Ohariu Ridin?. A petition was presented praying that a footpath shonld be formed from the Porirna Railway Station to the township. The matter was left in Councillor Jillett'd banda. It was decided that the Councillors should establish pounds in their raspective districts.

Recently warrants wore issued from the Magistrate's Court at the instance of D. H. Johnston, licensee of the Club Hotel, Martinboroagh, holding to bail J. Olson, C. Hendriokaon, and J. Johnston, for debt. Defendants were arrested, and kept in custody from Saturday till Monday, on which day the cases were oalled on in Court, and adjourned on the defendants' application until to-day, when the plaintiff failed to appear. Mr. Jellicoe, on behalf of the defendants, applied to' the Court, under the provisions of the Magistrate's Court Aot, for compensation for unlawful arrest. Mr. Martin said he did not consider the seotion of the Aot applied to tbsae oases, as judgment had not been recorded, but he would allow a guinea costs against the plaintiff in eaoh case. The following motion by Councillor Wakeham will be discussed by the Hutt County Counoilat Us next meeting: — "Thai; upon the payment of its fair share towards the cost of charitable aid and general administration, the whole of the rates, both general and separate, to the present value be granted to the Wainui Siting for three years." Mr. John Arnott is retirihg from the proprietorship of the Gw.y Kiver Argus, haviDg been bought out by his partners, Messrs. Kerr and M'Carthy. A very interesting lecture on " Shorthand Writers" was delivered in the Board of Education offices last evening by Mr. A. W. Kitson, one of the Vice- Presidents of the Wellington Shorthand-Writers' Assooiaton. A proposition which he made to the meeting, affirming that it was desirable that the various Shorthand- Writers' Associations in New Zealand should federate, and form a branohof the NationalPhonogr&phio Association, was agreed to. Mr. Kitson was thanked for hia address. Large congregations attended Sunday's servioes in connection with the Sydneystreet Primitive Methodist Sunday Sohool. Powerful Bermons were preached in the riiorning and evening by Bar. J. Dumbell and Her. E. Drake. The Bbt. J. Guy gave a stirring address to the aoholan in the afternoon, and also distributed the prizes. There was special tinging and reoiting by the suholats. Special anthems by the children and ohoir, and a solo by Mrs. MuUer, made the evening service very enjoyable. The services will be continued this evening »t7.30.
