SPORTING. WELLINGTON R.C. AUTUMN AND STEEPLECHASE MEETING. [By Austral.]
There is every prospect of tho local Motropohtan Club being favoured with fine weather for tho opening day of their finaj meeting this Beason, wbiob is set down to bo held at Hutt Park to-morrow. The acceptances for tho different events hardly came up to expectations, but tbe fields iv the Thompson, Hack, and Stewards' Handicaps should provide interesting contests. Tho popular fancies for the prinoipal event are St. Clements, Barmby, Waiuku, and North Atlantio, but each of the oompetitors in the raoo will be well supported on the totalisator, and tho winner is certain to return his backers a good dividend. The last three days of Bdo weather has had tbe effeot of improving the course considerably, whioh was previously in a sodden state owing to the recent rains, and to-morrow the going should be splendid. Mr. A. Tonng, senr., I am pleased to state, has so far recovered from ■ his rocont illness as to be able to wield the starter's flag. In addition to the train arrangements, Mrs. Bitson will convey passengers to the course by a brake, which leaves tho Binpiro Hotel at 10.45 a.m. Trains leave Te Aro at 10.13 a.m., 11 10 a.m., 11.56 a.m., and 1.5 p.m. Mr. F. Cooper, of the Thistlo Inn, will have charge of the grandstand lunoheon-room. The probable starters in the Thompson Handicap, with their riders, are i — North Atlantio (Boyle), St Clementß (W. Smith), Barmby (Brown), Golden Fleoce (Q. Smith), St. Laura (Gillie), devolution (H. Hoed), Prinae Cole (Armstrong), Waiuku (Russell), Lorelei (Jenkins), The Artist (G. Beid), Sea Serpent (Kingan), Legislator (Myers), Searchlight (Connop). Brooklet is a doubtful starter owin? to injuring herself. My anticipations are as follow :— Railway Handicap. — Aphony. Hurdlo Raoe.— Ebor. Haok Hurdles.— Bird. Thompson Handicap.— St. Clomtnti. Haok Raoo.— Slaiden. Hunters' Steeplechase. — Kaika. Stewards' Handicap. — Spindrift. The Seoretary of the Wellington Racing Club requests us to state that Rovan will be eligible to start at the approaching meeting, as the amount due to the Auckland Club by the owner qf the horse has been paid. The jookey F. Kingan has almost reoovered from the injuries reoeived"by Legislator running into a post with him at thp Wairarapa Meeting last week, and be leaves for Sydney this week.
