FOOTBALL.
A match took place on Saturday between the Petono and Athlelio Clubs, which resulted in a win for the latter by six points (two tries) to' nil. The play was not of a startling oharaoter. M'Kenzie captained the suburban team, and Bhodeß the oity players. Early in the first spell Thompson and Tong took the play up into the Athletic 25, the latter finishing up with a good run, but lost the ball, and M'Kenzie, who was booking him np, secured it, and raced over the line. Roberts' attempt to enhance was futile. Later on, splendid passing between Thompson, Slater, and Roberts ended in the latter gaining the coveted line, after a brilliant dodgy run. Banmber failed to convert. There was no score in the seoond spell, whioh was only noticeable for a passing run, in whioh Roberts, M'Kenzie, and Slater were prominent, the latter being brought down on the line. For the Petones, afl the backs played well, Pollock, Roberts, and Thompson being especially prominent, but the play of the Petone forwards was disappointing. M'Kenzie played a dashing game on the wing, and baffled Rhodes. Pringle and Lark alto played well. Sheriff proved a tower of strength among the Athletics, and was ably seconded by Brodie. Among the forwards Rhodes was noticeable in some parts of tho game. Coady and Haldane were also oonspicuous. Mr. J. Gamble was refereo, Messrs. J. T. King and J. H. Pagni acting as line umpires. The Wellington-Melrose game on No. 2 Ground was not very interesting to watoh, several prominent players of both teams being absent. Warwick potted a goal for Melrose, whioh was the only score during the afternoon. Roaobo, Home, Turton, and Cuff (books), Boe, Mnrray, Daore, and Bawson (forwards), were the pick of the Wellingtons. Warwick and Spenoer (b&oke), Laughton, Johnston, and Jaokson (forwards), showed very fair form for Melrose. Mr. J Swindley aoted as referee, Messrs. Hallamore (Wellington), and A. Smith (Melrose), acting as tonoh-hne judges. 'J he Selwyn A team beat the B team by 10 points to nil. White and H. Redmond scored tries, and M'Cartby potted a goal for tho winners. _ The Poneke and Oriental Clubs only prao ticed. The members of both clubs showed very fair form. It is stated that D. M'Gill, who is at present in Auckland, will play for Petone this season. Petone should not be deficient in the baok division this season, which has proved their Btnmbling-blook for Beveral years past. The Poneke Clnb's first, second, and third fifteens mustered strongly at Petone on Saturday, when an excellent practice game took place. Some fine form was shown by several of those taking part, notably in the first fifteen ranks. The Wellington Club will not have the services of A. Dnnoan in their earlier matches this season, as he is going on a holiday trip. < The Poneke Club will probably have the use of the building whioh has done duty for training purposes in previous seasons. Lipscombe, who has represented Nelson, Marlborongh, and Wanganui, will materially strengthen the forward ranks of Petone this season. , A. Beauohamp, at one time captain of the Poneke seoond team, but who last season threw in Mb lot with the Athletic Club, is about to leave for Christohuroh. Taplin, a first fifteen Athletio Club pUvyer, will be unable to play this season. The Melrose Club has secured the services of one or two prominent players. Next Saturday the Ponekes are set down to play the Athletics, and Petone will play Melrose. The Swifts played a friendly game with a rather weak team of the United on Saturday afternoon at Karori. The former won by 7 goals to 1 . Thompson put the ball through four times, and M'Donald twice, for the winners. The losers laoked combination, but played well individually.
