VIOLENT DEMONSTRATIONS BY THE SOCIALISTS. |UNITID PBEBB ASSOCIATION. | Paris, 17th Jannary. At the meeting of ths National Assembly in Versailles, tbe first ballot for the eleotion of President resulted : —

Violent soenes were oaußed by tbe Socialists on the announcement of M. Fanre's election. The first ballot was oonduoted amid persistent uproarious interruptions by the Sooialista. M. Dupuy received four votes. M. Rousseau withdrew from the second ballot. On the final result being declared the Socialists cried, " Down with the rogues and robbers! To prison with them." M Cballemol-Lioour abruptly closed the Assembly in order to avoid worse tumult. M. Faure, replying after the eleotion, said he accepted the position with gratitude and a deep sense of responsibility. At the same time he appealed to all parties for support. On Hb arrival in Paris be recoived a great ovation. The Duo D'Orleans issued a manifesto in whioh he declared the hour was near when the country wonld revert to Monarchy. In the meantime he advised his supporters to elect the man as President who was beat able to preserve order. London. 18th January. The new President is an Opportunist. He is a ship owner, of Havre, a self-made man, and haw a spotlees record. He is of Protestant family, though he assured the National Assembly that he was a Catholic. Tho Times thinks M. Faure will prove a seoond Carnot, but less austere. The Standard donbts whether ho will be better treated than the late President, and thinks M. Brisson wonld have boon a stronger selection. It exprenses the opinion that eleotion to the highest office would have converted the latter from .Radicalism to Toryism. It is stated that M. Chal'emel-Laconr pri. vately urged M. Faure to aot with firmness, even to severity if necessary.
