Newtown Wesleyan Church Bazaar and Fancy Fair.

Great interest is being shown in. the bazaar and fanoy fair, declared open by tho Mayor-elect yesterday afternoon, in aid of the funds for diminishing tho debt on the Wesloyan Church property at Newtown The schoolroom presents quite an attractive appearanoe, the stalls being very tastefully decorated with uanful and fanoy articles, and presided over as follows : —Fanoy stall, Meadaraos Danks, Boxall, Hosking, and Chappie : fanoy stall No. 2, Mrs. Palkeld, and Miases Panckhurst. Boxall, and Bell; refreshment, stall, Mezdames Ward, Bell, Beid, and Misses Bennett, Wilton, and Fletcher; prodnce stall, Mrs. Overend and Mr. Reid; jjonfeotionery stall, Mrs. Colo and Miss Hutchings ; fern stall, Miss Warbridgo and Mr. Tasker ; flowor stall, Mrs. Brailsford, and Misses Hoskingand Moffatt ; summer Christmas tree, Mrs Kinnebnrgh ; winter Christmas tree, Mr. Cobhara ; snowball. Misses Cobham and Henderson. From the schoolroom a doorway opens into a promenade marquee, where at intervals musical selections are rendered, and phrenolpgioal readings are given on payment of a ■mall fee. There are also two electrio batteries at work. Last evening the musical programme was under the oonduotorship of Mr. C. I>. Mackintosh. The bazaar is to bo open this afternoon and evening, when Mr. F. Billman will provide a musical entertainmont.

The Circular Switchback Railway Company aunonnces that tho railway will bo opened on Saturday aftornoou, and the first passenger train will run at 3 p.m. The inspection by the Government Engineor and the City Inspector was made to-day, and the works were passed as most satisfactory. Tbe switchback should become a moat popular pleasure resort. The obarge is moat moderate, and an efficiont band has been engaged. The collision of the steamer Orowaiti with a small boat last Saturday morning was the subject of a preliminary investigation by the Collector of Customs this' morning. The evidence of Captain Spedding, Mr. W. Cook (second offioer), and F. Robineon (lamptrimmer), was taken. Messrs. Silvester and and M'Kinstry, occupants of the boat run down, were unable to attend, owing to indisposition, and the 'enquiry was adjourned for their evidence . The haif-yeafly meeting of the Excelsior Lodge of Druids wa3 held last evening. Bro. M. J. Donnelly, A.D., ocoupied tho chair. The balance-Bheet, showing most satisfactory rosults numerically and financially, was adopted. The following officers were elected for the enauing term : — A.D , Bro. J. Demuth; V.A., Bro. W. A. Ritson; Sec, Bro. W. Jenninga ; Treas., Bro. T. Elliott - (20th term) ; A.D. Bards, Bros. J. Flaherty and W. Smith ; 1.G., Bro. P. Murray; O.G , Bro. J. Johnston ; V.A. Bards, Bros. E. T. Benge and T. H. Williamson! M.S., Bro. W. Walker j Auditor, Bro. H. Rv Hollis ; Trustee, Bro. G. Spearling. Broa. J. Gilmonr, J. Johnston, and C. Stokel were nominated for the office of Grand Lodge Representative, and Bro. T. Boon and J. Davis for that of District President. Bro. C. Stokel, D.P., installed tho new officers. A hearty vote of thanks was given to the D.P., J P.A., retiring officers, scrutineers, and visitors ; also to Bro T. Boon, who has resigned the secretaryship after having served continuously for nine year 3. The date of the next meeting will le advortised in these columns. Z The Xmas presents are making things hum at 0. Smith's, the Cash Draper, Cnba-street. Ever since starting the gifts the shop and showroom have been daily throngod with buyers, all expressing themselves delighted with the gifts and the value thSy have reoeived. This week 100 ladiea' fashionable drill costumes will be offered very cheap, viz., 12a 6d, 15a 6d, 17s 6d, 20s, worth twice the money. Alao a cheap line of 250 children's blouses and overalls, usual price 5s 6d to 10a 6d, reduced to 2a lid, 3s lid, 4s Od. Remember, every buyer of 10a and over will reoeive a present. — Advt.
