WAGES ON THE DRAINAGE WORKS.

TO THE KDITOB. Sir— l wieh to call public attention and the City Father^' Benße of justice to bear npon the injustice whioh obtains on the above worka in regard to wages and holidays. The labourers get 7a a day— Is a day less than private contractors' rates. The men were satisfied with this wage nntil they lost the seven yearly holidays, always heretofore paid by the Corporation and Harbour Board all round. Lately tho Counoil passed a motion stopping these holidays all round, but subsequently the motion was cancelled as regards the Corporation employes, but tho drainago employes are now only paid for Christmas Day and Good Friday, and at the same 7s a day, and that only in dry weather. Why ia thia distinction ma3e between the two cla-ses of Corporation workmen ? Is it to put it on to the salaries of the already well-paid, Hbliday-paid, wet-and-dry-paid big officials? The drainage workmen should in all fairness be put on the same footing as tho Corporation and Harbour Board employe's as regards holidays, or get the other shilling a day, and be put on the same footing as private contractors' rates. I hope_, sir, our worthy Mayor-elect at least, seeing that he has to thank the workers for his late successful election, will see jnstico done in this fish of one and flesh of the other job. I am, &c, sth December. Paddt.
