SENTENCE ON MEMBERS OF THE " MALA VITA."
ReutoA-'s Rome correspondent telegraphs tiiat at Lucera, in the Province of Foggia, sentence has been pronounced upon the men whose trial commenced on September : 12th, on the charge of being members of the criminal association known as the "Mala Vita." Most of the prisoners were young men, but the chief, a man named Anne- \ chini, had a record of as many aa eighteen previous convictions. The society to which they belonged first ; became known in July, 1882, the : object of its members being to make their living by robbery and rapine, , and not to do any honest work. The i society was directed by a secret hierarchy, and its members received promotion or punishment as the chiefs might decide. Unfaithful brethern were punished by death. Fourteen of the prisoners were acquitted, and ' sixty-eight were sentenced to various terms of imprisonment varying from five to ten years. The prisoners , were defended by fourteen advooatea.
