Excessive Heat kills a Coal Trimmer.
( Owr Own Corretpondent.) Hobart, 23rd November. A n enquiry was held at the Brisbane Police Court into the oironmstanoes attending the death of Alfred Ridley, a ooal trimmer on board the steamer Duke of Devonshire, whilst off Aden, towards the end of September. Several firemen deposed that the deceased was overcome by the heat, whioh registered 170 deg., and he was unable to work. Tho third engineer struck him and compelled him to work, but eventually he succumbed. The evidence of the engineers, captain, and doctors was to the effeot that death was probably due to heat apoplexy. They asserted that the deceased was not compelled to work if he could not stand the boat, and that he volnnteered to remain in the stokehole The third engineer denied that he Btruok the deceased.
