At a meeting of the Board of Education, Mr. Petrie, Cbief Inspector, wrote relative to a request of the Women's Temperance Association for the compulsory teaching of temperance in the schools. He said he did not think it advisable to make the reading of or examination in any lessons or books on temperance compulsory. The general opiniou of the members was to the appb'cation. On the motion of the Chairman, the following resolution was agreed to :—": — " That the request of the Women's Temperance Association cannot be acceded to, as the book thoy desired to introduce was a permissive book."
