POISONING WITH TOBACCO.
+ IBt Telegraph, i | united phesB association. | Auckland, 17th September. Iv sentencing Jas. Board on the charge of manslaughter of the boy Erie Hart M'Cullough, Mr. Justice Oonolly said that there was reason to believe that before prisoner came to this colony he had been cirrying on this irregular praotioe for a lengthened term, and that there were circumstances which made it desirable ho shonld leavo the other colonios. A man who profoHsed without previous examination of the body to know all that was going on inside of it, and proeoribod accordingly, ought not to be believed, more especially when that man bad had no medical cdnoation. However, a man had only to pretend enough and he wonld find people who would believe in him. Prisoner had admitted there that ho had had no medical education, that he made no examination, and that he was ignorant of the action of tobacco when used- in the manner ho ordered it to be used. Without any knowledge of the unfortunate boy's condition he had said the boy was free from organic dieeaso, which was proved to be correct by the post mortem examination ; also that there were large worms in tho boy, which the pott mortem proved not to be the case. Ho hod also said tho action of tho enema would not reach the worms, aud yet had prescribed this injurious drug in a quantity which all medical testimony showed mußt necessarily have caused death- Although his intentions might have been as good as possible, still ho was most' grossly ignorant. Tho sentence of the Court was that ho be imprisoned for six montliß without hard labour, and also pay tho costs of tho prosecution.
