A Lunatic Sues for Breach of Promise.
♦ (Our Own Correspondent. J Melbourne, 9th September. A singular breach of promise case was heard by Mr. Justice Stephen, vrben Margaret Hogan sued Thomas Hickoy for .£2OOO damages. It was shown that sho was an inmate of tho Gladosvillo Lunatic Asylum, and at first the Judgo was in doubt whether he should hear tho caso, ou the ground that it was questionable whether a lunatio could give proper instructions to a solicitor. Eventually he decided to go on with the ease, bat the proceedings were blocked by the absence of the plaintiff, who was not in a fit state to- give evidence. Defendant admitted having written a number of affectionately-worded letters to the plaintiff, but denied having promised to marry her. As the Judge pointed oat, there was ixn evidence to aapport the case, and the jury fonul for tho defendant. The Judge suggested that enquiries ought to be made to ascertain how the action came to be brought.
