[UNITED FRXSB ASSOCIATION.] Palmerston North, 16ih September. At the enquiry into the recent fires in Palmerston a verdict was returned in each case that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. Auckland, 15th September. Mr. Northoroft, addressing a young man named Patrick Cassey, brought before him on a charge of deserting his three children, suggested that men wilfully failing to support their families should be flogged. The Charitable Aid Boards, he thonght, made matters worse by allowing snch men tho opportunity to cast their children on the charity of the public Wanganui, This Day. Mr. Hatrick's new stern-wheel river steamer Wanuwi was successfully launched this morning-, in the presence of 700 townspeople. The steamer is 121 ft long, with 18ft beam. Her estimated draught is 12 inches, and her speed Hi miles an hour. A coat has been found on the beach at Nukumaru containing the discharge papers of H. M'Kay, an A.TJ. of the wrecked schooner Christine. It is expected that some bodies will be washed np on the beach next spring tides between Wanganui and Nukumaru. Invercaegill, This Day. Charles Bates, who has been acting as agent for the Amalgamated Shearers' and General Labourers' Union, was charged to-day with|cmbezzling two sums of ss, and remanded.
