Tho Eogistrar-Goneral's return of vital statistics for tho month of August gives tho number of births and deaths and proportion of deaths to 1000 of population as follows in tho four chief cities. The returns on thia occasion do not inolude other boroughs, except those which form suburbs to the cities :— Births. There woro 46 doaths of persons of 65 years and upwards : of these, seven men of 67, 74, . 7G, 80, 85 (two), and 88, and nine women of \ 65, 67 (two), 68, 71, 74, 76 (two), and 80, died 0 at Auokland ; seven men of 67, 69 (two), 70, 0 75, 77, and 83, and two women of 74 and 76, ■, at Wellington ; ono man of 76, and six 1 women of 66, 70, 74, 78, 79, and 84, at f Christohnroh ; seven men of 65, 70, 73, 75, . 76 (two), and 78, and seven women of 68, 75, r 77,78,81,89, and 93, at Dunodin. o The deaths from specific _ febrile and f zymotic diseases at the four chief towns and ,f suburbs increased from 19 in July to 25 in 0 August. Influonza was again the most fatal v of tho zymotic diseases, the deaths for n Augnst having boon 10 altogether— 4 at II Auckland, 4at Christchnroh, and 2 at Dune edin. Whooping-cough caused 5 deaths v (ohildron under five years), all at Auckland. c Doaths from typhoid and low fever wore 3 only 3—2 at Wellington, and 1 at Christ,f church. The mortality from diarrhcoal s diseases was also vory low, comprising 1 [ death at Auckland and lat Christchnrch. o Scarlatina and diphtheria caused 1 death c each, at Wellington. The other deaths were 0 — 1 from syphilis (a child under five years), ; 1 from orysipelas, and 1 from puerperal sop- [' tictemia. From parasitic diseases, a male of '18 years died at Wellington of hydatids on tho brain. From constitutional diseases the •\ mortality in August was considerable, iuf eluding 4T deaths, or 2139 por cent, of tho B total deaths from all causes. Of these, 28 B were from tubercular diseases, 10 from t cancer, and 2 from diabetes. From lccil 1 diseases tho doaths at tbo four control wero t 98, or nearly 49 per cent, of the total. Of B this mimbor, 47 deaths wero from diseases of the respiratory organs, including 37 from bronchitis, pneumonia, and pleurisy, 6 from I congestion of the lungs, besides 4 others. B 1 his is a great increase on the mortality for c tho previous month, when deaths Irom B diseases of the respiratory system were only j 30. Diseases of the circulatory Bystem cong tributed 17, diseases of the nervous system j 16. and diseases of the digestive system 13 0 deaths. Thero were 4 deaths from diseases c of tho urinary organs, which, with 1 from B disease of integnments, complete the total ; . in this claus. Ot the violent deaths, 4 were '■_ cases of accidental drowning. Besides these, ; a girl of 15 years died from accidental burny ing, a mill-hand from injuries received when 1 rafting timber, and a labourer from exposure t to cold. Thero were two suicides, one of a [. schoolmaster, from self-inflicted wounds in c tbe throat, the other of a woman, who hanged y herself.
