A BITTER EXPERIENCE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir— Having continually read in thoLondon papers tho resume of lectures and speeches, in which New Zealand was Baid tobe a peu pris the most prosperous country in tho world — at any rate, it was said thatthere waß plonty of work of all "kinds to be had there, that exceptionally good wages were being paid, and that anybody going toNew Zealand would be sure to get a situation toon after landing. I, believing the6o to ba bona fide assertions, sailed for New Zoaland full of hope, and believing to havo a bright future before me. Bnt my illusions were soon dispelled. Seven months have elapsed sinoe my landing here, and I have not been able to get anything to do yet. although I have tried hard. Time upon time I have boen to the Government Labour Bureau, but in vain. At last, driven to desperation. I asked for employment on the Queen's Drive, but was refused on aooount of my not being a married man. I am 21 years of age, well educated , speaking, reading, aud writing Fronoh and German thoroughly, and yet cannot get the meanest ' occupation. The Government pass Labonr • Bille, &c, which may be very good in their ' way, but they do not seem to do much for 1 people who are unemployed and practically starving. Surely ir. is a shame that people of influence should be allowed to apeak in this way in Knglaml, and entioe people who bold good positions at Home out here to destitution ! lam, &c, J. Robert Bridge. 11th September.
