To you who live in far-off lands And 'mid pine forests roam, To you it is I sing the praise (?) Of this " Our Island Home" In winter time our gales are strong — We have sufficient proofs, For we see our vessels robbed of masts, Our houses of their roofs. The mud either stands up in banks, Or flows with a great rush, Defying the Corporation man And the sweeper with bis brush. Each evening when* tho paper comes, This kind of thing greets you — " Warnings aro out for heavy galos," Which warnings prove too true. 'Mid pathless trucks or gloomy wilds I cure not whore I roam ; If only I could nay " Good-bye !" To this " Our Island Home." — ■' Colleen Bawn." | THE DIFFERENCE. Poor timid John loved Lucio well, But his great love he could not tell ; When by himsolf he felt so bold, But with her he went hot aud c-ild, And trembled — found ho scarce could apeak ; The red forsook his ruddy cheek ; Oh, how he wished that she could read His heart, and know him hers, indeed. It grew a trouble and a care ; " How could he his great love declare ? At last, one day in dire despair, He sought his dad for sympathy. " Oh, what am I to do ?" asked he. " Do ! do ! you coward," roared his sire, " 'Tis only courage you require ; Do ? how do others do ? I ask. Pray, how did I perform the task ?" Said John, " But you were in no danger; 'Tis certain you had little bother, For yon hud but to ask my mother, And this girl is a stranger." —"F.H."
