At a meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Academy of Finn Arts held last night it waa decided to open the annual exhibition on Saturday, the 15th September. The ball takes place to-morrow evening in the Petone Drillsbed, the use of which has been generously granted by tho Petone Navals, and is under the patronage of the Mayor and Councillors, Sir James and Lady Hector. A largely-attended meeting was held in the Public Hall at Brooklyn last evening for the pnrpose of considering the question of forming a brass band. A proposal to form a band was agreed to, and 15 persons consented to become members. A strong committee was formed to arrange details. The band is to be known as the Brooklyn Brass Band. As notified elsewhere, thero will bo a meeting to-night in St. John's Schoolroom of the members of the late Mr. Magnus Peterson's ohoir. To-morning evening Dawre's cantata, " The Lion of Judah," will ba given in St. James' Presbyterian Schoolroom, Adelaideroad, by a choir and orchestra of 40 members, under Mr. 0. H. King. The proceeds will be in aid of the church funds. An inset circulated to-day gives details of bargains offered at the surplus stock gale now going on at C. Smith's, Cuba-street. The proprietor of the Cheap Meat Mart, Manners-street, advertises a midwinter display of meat for to-morrow evening. Waverler House, Boulcott-street, has changed hands, and is now under the management of Mrs. Caleb Cox, formerly of South Canterbury and tho Wairarapa, who asks for a share of public patronage. A. Or. Tame & Co. will sell Mrs. Magnus Peterson's furniture at her residence in Hill-street (Mr. Benjamin Smith's late residence) on Monday afternoon. Tko furniture is good, and was only lately brought from Home. George Thomas & Co. will sell to-morrow, fruit, &c. Townsend & Paul will sell to-morruw, flowering shrubs, fruit, trees, ic. . A. G. Tame and Co. will sell to-morrow, furniture, &c. The daily throng of buyers at To Aro House sale ot Sydney and Christchurch stooks is simply marvellous. Every day fresh lots aro added to the bargain list.
