THE VOLUNTEERS.

The ordinary weekly drill of the City Rifles took place last evening at the Volunteer .Drillshed. and was well attended. There were present — 2 sergeants, 2 corporals, and 30 rank and file, under Captain Collins, with whom was Lieut. W-. G. Duthie. The evening was devoted to instruction by Captain Collins in tbe new infantry drill, and in skirmishing drih by Lieut. Duthie. Considerable progress haa been made by_ the corps in the new drill, the details of which have now been grasped by non-commissioned officers and men. Badges for long service, as awarded by the Honourable the Defence Minister, were presented at the close of the parade, the recipients being is follows:— Sir years' sernce star*, to Corporals Guise, Hoberteon.and J. A . Elliot ; three years' silk stars, to Privates A N . Bell, ff. Bunckenburgh, R. Dixon, J. Driscoll. Lanoo-Corpl. Halpin, Privates R Halpin, F. Fames, Lance-Corpl Madden, Privates C. E Matthews, J. Steel, H. Toomer, F. Wickens, md A. Frwdi. Prior to disjniseal the men,

wero notified that tho monthly inspection parade of the company 'oy Lieut.-Colonel Newall would take place next Monday ovening, when a full muster of the corps was expeoted. The transfer of Frank Bennington from tho Nelson Battery N.Z. Rej?t. of Artillery was duly received and accepted.
