THE UNEMPLOYED.
t A number of unemployed assembled at the ) Departmental Buildings this morning in response to an advertisement inserted by , some of them in the Evknino Post. About 120 men assembled in the grounds, and some 40 or 50 remained on the opposite footpath. A speaker said that the meeting had been called with a view to forming a deputation 1 to the Premier, and also to the Mayor— in reference to employment on the drainage works. It was further desired to refute the statements of Mr. Tregear as to the number of men out of work, and of men who r would not go up the country to work. As to-day was a holiday, he suggested that the meeting be postponed till to-morrow at 10 o'clock, when he hoped that they would bring their mates and " form up." Another speaker advised the men to meet outside Sargood's warehouee on the reola- • mation instead of at the Buildings. It was ■ agreed to do this, and the meeting adjourned I till 10 o'clock to-morrow". The first speaker i then asked all who had been offered work by the Labonr Bureau and declined to go up country, to hold up their hands. One hand was held np, but immediately taken down a?aiu, when its owner had the matter explained to him. A reqnest that all who would take work in the country if offered | should hold up their hands led to a sheaf of hands going up. Another speaker suggested . that they should ask the Premier for some of t his £200,000 ampins, and the meeting then ( diEporeed.
