4 LAWSUIT BY A DISAPPOINTED PURCHASER. 'UNITED PBESa ASSOCIATION. I London, 18th April. Mr. Hall, who purchased Cumnor Place in the belief that he was acquiring Amy Robsart's prison, commonly reputed to be haunted by her ghost, Bued the Earl of Abingdon to rescind the purchase, on the ground that it is not the original historio place. A verdict was given in favour of the Earl. [Amy Robsart, daughter of Sir John Robsart, was the wife of Robert Dudley, the famous Earl of Leicester—the favourite of Queen Elizabeth, who encouraged him openly as a suitor. Amy Robsart is the heroine of Scott's work, Konilworth." She was practically kept a prisoner in Cumnor Place while Leicester attended Court. It was generally supposed at the time that the Earl of Leicester was accessory to the murder of Amy Robsart in Cumnor Place. |
